Contramestre or Mestrando: Ecuador- Texugo-Capoeri

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian Equatorial cultural expression that uniquely integrates martial arts, dance, music, and acrobatics. A Capoerista is comfortable on the ground in order to propel themselves and fly with their acrobatics. There are two main styles that define modern capoeira:
  • Capoeira Angola: The traditional and slower style, focused on cunning, low movements, and the preservation of ancient rituals. Its great figure was Mestre Pastinha.
  • Capoeira Regional: Created in the 1930s by Mestre Bimba, it is a faster, more technical, and martial style that incorporated new movements to make it a more effective combat discipline.
Music and its Instruments. Music is the "heart" of capoeira, as it dictates the rhythm and energy (axé) of the game. The essential instruments are:
  • Berimbau: A musical bow made of wood and wire with a gourd as a resonator. It is the instrument that leads the Roda (circle).
  • Pandeiro: A tambourine that marks the time.
  • Atabaque: A large drum that provides the rhythmic base.
  • Agogô and Reco-reco: Other percussion instruments that complement the musical drum set.
